STEM PhD (LATAM)

Overview

Handshake is recruiting exceptional STEM PhDs residing in LATAM to join our AI research community. This program brings subject-matter experts together to enhance the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) across specialized scientific and technical domains. The Handshake AI Fellowship program runs year-round, though project availability will vary by discipline.

Details

The position is remote and asynchronous - work independently from wherever you are.

Flexible hours and the ability to work remotely, with a commitment of approximately 10 to 20 hours per week.

Project work includes and is not limited to developing domain-specific prompts and evaluating LLM responses.

Dedicate time researching topics that are interesting to you, with the assistance of AI.

Learn new skills while contributing to the changing world of AI across various disciplines.

Placement into a project will be dependent on project availability.

Qualifications

Doctoral students and graduates (including those currently enrolled in a PhD program or in postdoctoral positions) in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Engineering. 

Strong written communication — ability to translate complex research knowledge into clear, structured task instructions and evaluation criteria

Confident that your domain expertise can outmatch current AI systems in understanding and explaining key concepts in your field.  

Work Model and Project Details

Status: Independent contractor (not a full-time employee role)

Location: Fully remote

Schedule: Flexible and asynchronous, with no minimum hour requirement. Many contributors work approximately 5–20 hours per week when assigned to an active project

Duration: The Handshake AI program runs year-round, with projects opening periodically across different areas of expertise. Placement depends on current project needs, with opportunities to be considered for future projects as they become available

Work authorization information

F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible for projects on Handshake AI. Work with your Designated School Official to determine your eligibility.  If your school requires a CPT course, Handshake AI may not meet your school’s requirements. STEM OPT is not supported.
