The Role

We are hiring our first General Counsel to own everything legal at Verita. Today, legal

work is spread across multiple outside firms and the founders’ inboxes: customer and

vendor contract negotiations, a global contractor workforce, privacy obligations in

multiple jurisdictions, and the IP questions that come with AI training data. You will bring

this work inside the company, build durable legal processes, and act as a strategic partner

to the founders on our most important negotiations.

This is a role with real ownership. You will be the entire legal department on day one, with

meaningful outside counsel budget behind you.

What You’ll Do

• Customer contracts. Own the commercial paper that runs the business: draft and

negotiate MSAs and SOWs with sophisticated AI lab customers, with sharp terms on

payment obligations, verification and audit rights, termination, IP assignment, and

limitation of liability, and fix the gaps in our existing templates.

• Disputes and litigation. If disputes arise, you should know how to handle them end

to end: setting strategy, directing outside counsel, and knowing when to settle versus

fight.

• Global contractor workforce. Own the legal architecture for a large international

contractor network: worker classification (US and abroad), contractor agreements,

NDAs and IP assignment, background screening requirements, EOR relationships (e.g.,

Deel), and compliance for workforce monitoring tools.

• Privacy and data protection. Build and run our privacy program across GDPR, UK

GDPR, and US state law: handle data subject access requests, international data

transfers, consent requirements for monitoring software, and the data commitments

we make to enterprise customers. Partner with our security consultants on SOC 2 and

customer security reviews.

• Intellectual property. Navigate the IP questions at the heart of AI data work: work

product assignment, training data provenance, publicity and likeness rights, and

confidentiality obligations that run in both directions.

• Employment. Support offer letters, equity grants, payroll and tax compliance

questions, and employment matters as the team grows.

• Corporate. Keep the Delaware corporate house in order: board support, governance,

financing readiness, and corporate compliance.

• Outside counsel management. Consolidate work currently spread across several

firms, decide what you handle yourself, and manage outside spend against a budget.• Process. Contract lifecycle management, signing authority, playbooks, and record

retention, so the company scales without scaling its legal risk.

What We’re Looking For

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership (California, or eligible to

practice in California as registered counsel).

• 4+ years of experience combining training at a leading law firm with time as company

counsel at a startup, ideally a marketplace, staffing, HR technology, or AI data

business.

• Deep commercial contracting experience with enterprise counterparties, including

negotiating directly against skilled opposing counsel.

• Real experience managing disputes: you have run strategy before and during litigation

through outside counsel and negotiated settlements with real money at stake.

• Fluency in worker classification (contractor vs. employee) in the US and

internationally.

• Working knowledge of GDPR and US privacy law, including DSAR handling and

employee/contractor monitoring rules.

• A pragmatic, commercial risk instinct: you give clear answers, put them in writing

quickly, and know the difference between a blocker and a footnote.

• Comfort operating alone: triaging a demand letter in the morning, redlining an MSA at

noon, and answering a GDPR request in the afternoon.

Nice to Have

• Experience with AI training data, right of publicity/likeness licensing, or content

licensing for model training.

• Prior experience as the first legal hire or sole counsel at a startup.

• Experience standing up a compliance program (SOC 2, privacy certifications)

alongside security teams.
