Economics Expert

Overview

Handshake is seeking experienced Economics PhDs to support AI research through flexible, hourly contract work. This is not a traditional economics research or academic role. Instead, you’ll apply your expertise in economic theory, econometrics, and applied economic analysis to evaluate AI-generated content, provide structured feedback, and help improve how AI understands complex economic questions, markets, institutions, and evidence-based decision-making.

This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity that can be done alongside your primary employment.

Who This Is For

This opportunity is designed for professionals with advanced expertise in economics, including those who are:

• University professors or faculty in Economics or closely related fields
• Postdoctoral researchers in Economics or closely related fields
• Senior PhD students or candidates (typically ABD or 3rd year and beyond) at reputable institutions

This is not a traditional full-time role. You’ll apply once and, if qualified, be considered for part-time, project-based work as new projects become available.

Qualifications

We’re looking for candidates with:

• A PhD (completed) or advanced PhD candidacy (3rd year or beyond, with coursework completed) in Economics or a closely related field from a reputable institution
• A record of research output, such as peer-reviewed publications, working papers, or conference presentations
• Deep expertise in one or more of the following areas:
• Microeconomic theory and game theory
• Macroeconomics and monetary policy
• Econometrics and causal inference
• Labor economics
• Industrial organization and market design
• Public economics and welfare analysis
• International trade and finance
• Development economics
• Behavioral economics
• Financial economics
• Health, environmental, or urban economics
• Strong analytical and research skills, with experience evaluating complex economic problems formally and rigorously
• Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and follow detailed project guidelines

F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible for projects on Handshake AI. Work with your Designated School Official to determine your eligibility. If your school requires a CPT course, Handshake AI may not meet your school’s requirements. STEM OPT is not supported.
